Red Carpet Green Dress 2014 launches…with a menswear and womenswear element

Los Angeles, CA, October 10, 2013 – On Friday, October 11th

Red Carpet Green Dress 2014

Suzy Amis Cameron, Campaign Founder, will open the fifth year of Red Carpet Green Dress by inviting designers to enter the competition for a chance to see their design worn on the red carpet at the 86th Annual Academy Awards® on Sunday, March 2, 2014. “As we embark on the fifth year of the campaign, I’m overwhelmed with proud moments and also incredibly excited for what is still to come,” exclaims Amis Cameron. “One of my objectives of Red Carpet Green Dress was always to urge people to think more consciously about how they consume fashion and we have some surprises in store this year that I believe will help people make that link.”

This year, a menswear component is being added to the competition for the first time. Designers who wish to enter must submit a sketch of a gown or a tux, along with an explanation of how their design would be made sustainably. Two winners will be chosen and paired with established designers who will mentor them through the creation of their designs. This year’s mentoring designer will be announced soon and will certainly entice potential entrants. This past year’s winner, Michael Badger, watched as Skyfall actress Naomie Harris hit the Oscar carpet in his design in February. Once Badger was selected, he was whisked away to legendary designer Dame Vivienne Westwood’s London-based studio where she mentored him through the process of creating his design while her couturiers logged 120 hours on the gown. It was then transported to the Royal School of Needlework where a team of 22, including Badger, used organic cotton thread to log 680 hours of cherished hand embroidery, a major reduction of carbon footprint that showcases the importance of hand embroidery over machine embroidery as a sustainable art form.

The gown was made of a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic silk crepe de chine, embroidered with old vintage glass beads and chocolate candy wrappers, and featured standard reclaimed zippers. The dying process employed golden rod and a humble camomile, a renewable biodegradable natural plant source. There were no water pollutants or chemicals used and any waste produced was transferred to a compost heap. Greenpeace International’s Detox Fashion Campaign gave the dying process its stamp of approval and also fully endorsed the completed design as a whole. The campaign raised $120,000 for MUSE School CA, the single beneficiary of the campaign. MUSE School CA is a non-profit, educational organization in Malibu Canyon, California, dedicated to empowering children to realize their full potential through academic excellence, personal responsibility, compassionate relations, global consciousness and environmental awareness.  MUSE School CA was founded by Amis Cameron and her sister, Rebecca Amis.

The deadline for entries is now Friday, November 29th. Please visit www.RedCarpetGreenDress.com for full campaign details and contest information, including complete instructions on how to enter.
