There may have been only two eco-friendly dresses on the red carpet at last night’s Academy Awards, but that’s two more than in year’s past.  Two women on opposite sides of the Atlantic, Suzy Amis Cameron in LA and Livia Firth in London, are working to make the red carpet a platform for environmentally aware fashion.

Firth worked with Lanvin to source the eco-certified fabric (through her Green Carpet Challenge) that turned into Meryl Streep’s draped gold gown, while Cameron’s Red Carpet, Green Dress threw a competition to find a design worthy of Oscar night and The Artist`s Missi Pyle. Read more

GMA NEWS – Eco-friendly gown for ‘The Artist’ actress

Missy Pyle of “The Artist” turned out in an eco-friendly, flowing blue gown that won the third annual sustainable couture competition known as the “Red Carpet Green Dress” in the hopes that “more actresses will grace the red carpet in eco-friendly gowns.” She said her gown, designed by Valentina Delfino was made from silkworms. She is the first actress in an Oscar nominated film to wear the annual competition’s winning design.

Missi Pyle wears Red Carpet Green Dress gown to Oscars

Actress Missi Pyle had two wins at the Oscars last night: an Academy Award for Best Picture winner, ‘The Artist’, and her stunning gown, which was made entirely of sustainable materials as part of the Red Carpet Green Dress contest.

“It was such an honor to wear this dress – to be on a carpet that’s all about glamour, and have that glamour be sustainable,” said Missi Pyle. “To have so many people watching, and encourage them to question the purchases they make, feels relevant. Being on the carpet in this gorgeous gown, and making a statement, made me feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”

“To see everything come together after months of hard work was indescribable,”said Red Carpet Green Dress Global Campaign Director Samata. “We have shown that sustainable fashion can be beautiful, and carry a mass appeal, I am thrilled about all the future holds for Red Carpet Green Dress.”

Pyle’s gorgeous blue dress was the winning design from a competition called Red Carpet Green Dress, which was created three years ago by Suzy Cameron (James Cameron‘s wife) in an effort to promote sustainable fashion.
